2013-14 RESULTS

February 18, 2014

An error was reported in the allocation of points for the head to head series between UWGB and UWSP February 15, 16. It was a spreadsheet data entry error with UWGB's points being given to Oklahoma, and UWSP's points to UWGB. My apologies to all schools effected by this error. To be honest, the system I developed for keeping track of results is  being overwhelmed by the activity going on in College Curling. A very good problem to have, but does not excuse  this. My apologies, you all deserve better.

Colgate and Hamilton cohosted the Utica CC College Bonspiel on February 14. It was a traditional Bonspiel format with bonus games for the First and Second Event Semifinal losers. 16 teams from 9 schools participated. No automatic berth was awarded due to several mixed school teams.

Mixed school teams: Binghamton/Hamilton had 2 from each school, BowlingGreen1 had 3 from BowlingGreen and 1 from Hamilton, BowlingGreen2 also had 3 from Bowling Green and 1 from Hamilton. This is an unusual situation given that Hamilton also had 2 full teams on ice. The four players that participated on the split team constituted a "third" team so the Two Team rule applies to Hamilton's results. For point allocation purposes the Hamilton was given the benefit of the players on the split team totaling 5.5 points, the Hamilton2 team was considered the "3rd" team and did not earn the points associated with their finish (4).

2013-14 NEWS

LAST WEEK FOR ELIGBLE EVENTS FOR 2014 USA CURLING COLLEGE CHAMPIONSHIPS

This is the last week for this season to accumulate merit points that can be applied to the 2014 USA Curling College Championship. Sunday, February 16 is the last date that an event can take place and count towards the 2014 Championship. Starting Monday, February 17, all event points will be applied to the 2015 USA Curling College Championship. 2014 Event Results MUST BE reported no later than 11:59pm Eastern Time Tuesday February 18. Invitations will be announced and will go out to the top schools via email to their primary contact on Wednesday February 19, 2014. Invitations MUST BE POSITIVELY ACCEPTED no later than 11:59pm Eastern Time on February 24. Any school who does not positively respond by that time will be assumed to be not interested, and that schools position will be given to the next eligible school in the Merit Points Ranking table.

Two important items related to the USA Curling College Championship

ITEM 1) We have another sponsor. Gabrielle Coleman has graciously donated 8 copies of her new book "Introduction to Curling Strategy" - An intuitive guide to strategy for novice through intermediate curlers (Coming in February 2014). The 8 copies will go to the two teams that play in the Final Championship Game at the Four Seasons Curling Club in Blaine, MN, on March 16. Depending production schedule, we will either have copies available to all other attendees OR a pre-release sign up sheet for copies at a specially reduced price.

You may also order her first book “Break Through Beginner Curling”.

“Break Through Beginner Curling” is a collection of stories and how-tos for developing curlers. The book is designed to help beginners break through to the next level, whether that means competing at a national championship, or simply winning more games at Friday night league. Using lessons from her own journey from a hockey rink open house to the Olympic Trials, author Gabrielle Coleman fills in the gaps that hold new curlers back. She answers questions like “What is ‘Normal’?” She explains how to set up an effective practice on dedicated and arena ice. And, she shows how making simple strategy distinctions, like deciding to go for a “conservative steal” versus a “steal at all costs,” can make it easier to figure out which shots to call. Even if you are completely new to curling, the stories in this book will take you inside the spirit of the game and the curling experience.

Nothing can take the place of a real-life coach, but this book can help!

Groupfunding Campaign for 2014 Nationals in Progress

We have an active campaign to raise funds to assist in putting on the 2014 USA Curling College Championship. The campaign is being sourced at the indiegogo.com website (link below). The monies raised by this campaign will go DIRECTLY to the participants, in the form of meals, hotels rooms or travel reimbursements.

Let your friends, family, non-college fellow curlers, and the like know about this campaign.

BTW- The likely result of failure of this money raising effort will be entry fees starting in 2015. There are many that have questioned whether the crowdfunding model is viable. I would LOVE to prove them wrong, but I cannot do it all by myself.

College Curling Championship Adds Features

This year there will be a full Opening Ceremony, complete with all participants being piped onto the ice. "Curling has its origins from medieval Scotland, commencing in the early 1500’s. Many contemporary curling events feature a ceremonial performance by Scottish bagpipers, as a way of honoring curling athletes" says Committee member Nancy Myers who arranged the piping. "Since most college students are new to the sport, having a bagpiper play at the USA Curling College Championship is a way to introduce college curlers to another curling tradition that they may not have experienced before."

All invitees to the USA Curling College Championship will have the option to participate in a weekend long skills clinic. The Championship event will use only four of the six sheets available at the Four Seasons Curling Club, the remaining two sheets will be used for the clinic. The clinic will be available at no charge to all Championship participants and will run in shifts during a school's non-playing draws all day Saturday and Sunday morning. "There is an obvious disparity in college curling when it comes to the quality of ice and the quality of instruction from campus to campus." says Joe Murphy, USCA College Curling Committee member in charge of the clinic. "The goal of the skills clinic is to provide all athletes the opportunity to be part of the best curling experience possible, to continue to develop curling skills to a higher level, and to become active leaders in their campus clubs by building upon the experiences gained at the Nationals." Topics to be covered include the Physical and Mental aspects of curling, Sweeping Techniques, Weight Control, Strategy, Shot Selection, Interval Timing, Communication, and more.

Participating schools will receive up to five arm patches with the Championship logo at no charge. The patches can be placed on their on ice clothing. A limited number of additional patches will be available for $10/patch.

Game time clocks will appear at the Championships for the first time this year. Timing will be available as an option for any game during the weekend. Both Skips must agree to play under the clock for this to happen. The timing rules will be the same as for other championship events except that each team will receive 59 minutes for eight ends instead of the usual 73 minutes for ten ends.

 2014 National Championship Site Selected

Its OFFICIAL. The 2014 US College Curling National Championship will be held the weekend of March 14-16, 2014, at the Four Seasons Curling Club in Blaine, Minnesota (just north of MSP).

Note the weekend change. This is due to the US National Championship being moved into the previous weekend because of the 2014 Olympics (see how these things cascade). We will explore which weekend is better for our 2015 Championships.

We regret that we could not find an east coast club that was willing to host us this coming year. All of the clubs that had 4 sheets of ice or more were too busy to add another event to their calendar. Understandable in an Olympic year. Hopefully we will get east for 2015.

The 2014 United States College and University Curling Championship Guidelines will be available by the end of June. Look for a revised Merit Points Table, based on your feedback from this past year.
